command of communication skills and linguistic competence as well as cultural
competence. The course focuses on developing daily spoken Japanese and also reading
and writing Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. In addition to these four components, cultural information will be provided.
It is important to understand the cultural contexts in which the functions and usage of
language are embedded, so the students will both learn written Japanese and will practice
for effective communication with Japanese people in actual settings.
During the Fall semester, the students practice spoken language used in real life settings,
such as Vacation Plans, After the Vacation, Feeling ill, and Looking for a Part-time Job,
Looking for friends, etc.
